The Coffee Shot

The Coffee Shot, located at the junction of Lavender Street and Cavan Road, is a contemporary café specializing in coffee. With an unassuming shopfront, The Coffee Shot has revealed itself as a lucky find, spacious and accommodating – the café provides the perfect environment for a laidback afternoon filled with delicacies.

The Coffee Shot has a minimalistic interior decked in modern furnishing. Partitioned by modular shelves filled with mini potted plants, there is a lounge section with comfy plush armchairs for patrons looking to stay for the day. Capacious with many seats, it is also a delight to see a long counter bedecked with hanging chalkboards indicating the extensive menu. With the spotlights shining down at the counter, it serves to further emphasise the visually appetizing slices of cakes displayed in a small glass rack. Vines of artificial flowers, garlands, and large empty wheat sacks festooned the café, adding a rustic charm amidst the modern décor. Graphic portraits of the Coffee Shot, depicting patrons enjoying cups of coffee as well as artistic interpretations of coffee, covering a wall face added to the contemporary appeal as well. Wi-Fi password is also provided in the café along with stacks of magazines for patrons to peruse for entertainment.

From the many choices provided, I had selected the Eggs Benedict from the All-Day Breakfast along with a cup of Honey Con Leche under the Speciality Coffee section. The Eggs Benedict comprised of honey baked ham, poached eggs, toast, mesclun, and hollandaise. Served on a large plate, the aesthetic was a mouth-watering sight with two symmetrical portions of breakfast goodness. Honey baked hams rested atop two separate slices of toasted bread, with the fluffy poached eggs being the final topping of the mini sandwich, and the two parts separated by a fence of rocket leaves. Hollandaise sauce was then dribbled over the dish and completed with slices of cherry tomatoes.

The toast was warm and crunchy, and had complemented the rich flavoured ham. The ham itself was well baked, succulent, and the right amount of saltiness. Meanwhile, the poached eggs tilted more towards runny, both the egg whites and the yolk a little watery. However, by soaking the baked ham in the yolk, it had accentuated the rich and sapid flavour of the meat. The hollandaise was smooth and lemony, providing a piquant aftertaste to the wholesome dish. Meanwhile, the sharp taste of the vinaigrette that was drizzled on the rocket leaves was wholly delectable together with the tangy greens.

Honey Con Leche is the café’s concoction of latte mixed with honey. Medium roasted, it was smooth down the throat and had a strong acerbic note of coffee beans. The bitterness was piquant and I had found Honey Con Leche to be a pleasant drink with a winning aroma. However, the taste of the honey was faint, and only served to add a tiny bit of saccharinity to the powering taste of the coffee beans. For those who prefer other beverages, there are also flavoured frappe and latte, smoothies, pots of teas, and juices. Complimentary cups of water are also provided for palate cleansing.

The Coffee Shot is a café worth visiting, especially for people looking for a quiet place to do their work. After all, what can beat a nice cup of coffee, cosy ambiance, and palatable food?
